The second edition of the Hair Expo was held this past Saturday at Prestige Plaza, Exhibition Hall, along Ngong Road. The event saw the number of hairdressers competing in the various categories increase from last year’s 60 to 80. A new addition to the categories this year was the fantasy (creative) segment, raising the categories from 4 to 5 – Cut & Style, Battle of the Barbers, Bridal, Weaving and Fantasy.

5 hairdressers emerged winners and were issued with the Golden Comb awards. From these 5, an overall winner was crowned and awarded a fully paid expenses trip to the 20th Edition of the Beauty World Expo in Dubai.

Elizabeth Ngote, a weave specialist and winner of the weaving category, emerged the overall winner in this year’s season 2 competition.

“I’m blown away and truly honoured to be bestowed with this award. I have been in the hair business for the last 10 years. Last year I came in third place in the weaving category. Winning these awards has definitely been the highlight of my career.”

The Hair Expo was formed with the aim of creating a platform to inspire, educate and motivate all those in the hair fraternity through engaging forums, events and competitions.

“We realized there was a huge gap in the hair industry based on our own personal experiences where we had a challenge finding good hair dressers, as well as knowledge and information about the right kind of products and hair management tips in general, hence, we saw the need to launch Hair Expo,” said Emily Kinuthia, one of the Hair Expo’s co-founders.

The event saw the return of the same three judges who were present last year; some of the top hair professionals in the country: Farouk Jannedy, top hair designer and owner of Farouk’s Salon, Mercy Ollows, weave specialist and owner of Merco Salon and Ronnie Maingi, a highly experienced hair dresser at one of the top hair salons in Nairobi.

“The display of talent this year has definitely gone a notch higher compared to last year. I believe our hair industry is coming of age. This event is tailored to create healthy competition amongst hairdressers while raising the bar in hairdressing in the country. I cannot wait to see more hairdressers taking part in the event next year,” stated Farouk Jannedy, one of the event’s judges.

#ConservationTales: Ol Jogi loses two rhinos to poaching, new calf born

As conservationists all around the world continue to sound the alarm at the current rhino death rate and as a massive surge in poaching threatens to undo more than a century of careful protection and management, Ol Jogi Conservancy, last week, lost two male southern white rhinos to poachers.

On Friday, March 13th, 2015, Baraka and Riziki, two sub-adult male white rhinos aged 3.5 and 2.8 years old respectively, were found dead in Ol Jogi Conservancy. It is suspected that the respective cause of deaths was by gunshot.

Ol Jogi, just like the rest of Kenya, is no stranger to poaching attacks. The insatiable demand for rhino horn has left Ol Jogi devastated by the loss of nine rhinos in 2014. The Ranch, situated in the wildlife-rich Laikipia region of Kenya, was established in 1980 and has not lost a rhino to poaching until four were killed in 2012/13. Since these incidents, the Conservancy has significantly increased its security measures and is working in close collaboration with KWS. In the past few months, Ol Jogi has managed to stop three additional poaching attempts.

Good news

In the same bloody week that demonstrated the brutality of humankind, Ol Jogi was also the site of some heartwarming news: A white rhino cow named Laikipia gave birth to a new calf!

This brings the total number of rhinos residing in Ol Jogi to 17 white rhinos and 46 black rhinos.

Iman

Iman Abdulmajid lived in the United States as an illegal immigrant.

The Somali-born beauty – who’s been married to music legend David Bowie since 1992 – originally entered the US by lying to the government about her age, because she was too young to travel from Kenya without her parent’s permission, which she did not have.

Iman said: “I lied and said I was 19 to get the passport, because otherwise I had to have permission from my parents, and my parents would never have let me come.”

In addition to the government, the model, now 59, also deliberately misled her parents about her whereabouts.

Iman was meant to be studying at Nairobi University when she made the leap to New York, so she assumed that her parents would never find out where she really was, but it wasn’t long before her dad saw her in Newsweek.

Speaking to New York Magazine, Iman said: “It’s the only magazine my father reads, and the next thing, he’s reading, and there’s a picture of me in New York, saying, ‘She’s the hottest model now.’ I broke the law, but nobody can touch me now! I’m 60 years old, it’s too late. The time has passed.”

Kenyan barista, Martin Shabaya, is currently competing in the World Barista Championship (WBC)– the preeminent international coffee competition produced annually by World Coffee Events.

This year, the 16th edition of the annual World Barista Championship is being held in Seattle, USA from Thursday, April 9th to Sunday, April 12th, 2015.

Martin emerged as the winner of the 12th Kenya National Barista Championship earlier this year in February, and pulled out all the stops in his first ever international appearance at WBC on Thursday.

Watch Martin’s 15-minute Round 1 performance to a compilation of instrumentals and acid jazz here.

What is the World Barista Championship?

Each year, champions representing more than 50 Nations each prepare 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos, and 4 original signature drinks to exacting standards in a 15-minute performance set to music.

WCE Certified Judges from around the world evaluate each performance on the taste of beverages served, cleanliness, creativity, technical skill, and overall presentation. The ever-popular signature beverage allows baristas to stretch their imagination and the judges’ palates to incorporate a wealth of coffee knowledge into an expression of their individual tastes and experiences.

Round 1 of WBC continues today in Seattle with the semi-finalist’s being announced at 5:00PM PDT.

Good luck Martin!

responsible tourism

Responsible Travel, an online platform that connects consumers to the world’s best small holiday companies, has published the first league table of tourist boards – graded by purely their commitment to responsible tourism as published on their websites.

The national tourist board websites of Responsible Travel’s top 50 selling countries were examined and six questions relating to tourists boards’ vision, policies and activity in responsible and sustainable tourism, were asked. Tourist boards could score a maximum of six points and a minimum of zero.

Seven tourist boards scored zero, which surprisingly included some global tourism leaders such as – China, Vietnam, France, Japan and the USA. The lowest scoring seven tourist boards – China, Finland, Ethiopia, Vietnam, France, Japan and USA – made no reference to responsible or sustainable tourism anywhere on their websites. They also have neither published responsible tourism policies nor information for tourists.

Bhutan, South Africa, Sweden and England scored the highest with a perfect score of six; whilst Kenya scored a rating of four ahead of Spain, Australia, Jordan and Italy.

ORIGI

Origicheck, is an app that was established in 2014 with the objective of eliminating counterfeiting which damages brand owners’ reputation as well as lowering consumer confidence in the affected brands.

The app was created due to concerns of the high numbers of production and emersion of counterfeit products into the Kenyan market that leads to losses in the manufacturing industry and the consumers in equal measure.

Origicheck, which was launched in March this year, will curb emersion of counterfeit products into the Kenyan market benefiting both the manufacturer and the consumer at large. The main aim of the app is:

*To recover lost market by distributors
*To wipe out the 70% counterfeit market place and create a window for distributors to profit from.
*To supplement what the Anti Counterfeit Agencies are doing to end this war

“Mostly a redemption song…a clearing of my heart song.” Kenyan rapper Wangechi shares in her Behind-The-Scenes video of her latest release “Cardiac Arrest.”

The rapper admits that writing the single took a while during her time in nursing care after she survived a fatal car accident, which claimed the life of one of her close friends.
